This post is all about the best apps for working out!
If Covid has thought me anything about working out, it’s that there are many options to do it from home! I used to go to the gym every time I wanted to work out, especially to use all the equipment available. The only time I would work out from home was to stretch or do a quick morning or evening yoga session.
Covid has changed the game of working out for me and for many other people. I save time by not commuting to my gym. Remember when we were discussing the perfect morning routine? With the help of some amazing apps for working out, I am ready to exercise as soon as I jump out of bed. I have been working from home a lot more recently and whenever I have a little break or even on my lunch break I tend to squeeze in a workout. I have been loving the experience of being able to work out any time!
This does not mean that you have to resign your gym membership, as the gym does offer some great equipment that you might not have at home. However, it’s a great alternative to work out from home now. I have curated the best apps to help you achieve just that!
Here are the top apps for working out in 2022!
Apps for working out
Grow with Jo
I’ve recently discovered Jo’s Youtube channel, and that discovery came at the perfect time for me! I wasn’t really finding any motivation to work out anymore, on top of that Christmas was rolling around with all its foods and drinks. Basically, I didn’t work out much in December.
In order to get back into it, I was looking for a walking-working out, with moves that I could be doing standing (my preferred way of working out) and good music. Jo has a wide variety of videos on her Youtube channel: dance workout that boosts your mood and is a great way to get back to it, walking workout from 15min to 1hour and her torch in 10 videos that target a specific muscle group. The best news of all: everything is free!
After a while, I tried her GrowwithJo app (available for both iOS and Android). She has a 7-day trial, so you can test out all the features, which is perfect for you to discover: the meal plan and groceries list she has in store for you, the long list of workout programs, and single workouts (she keeps them coming and I am loving her recent New Year Glow Up Challenge!). She even has a “Balance section” all about meditation, breathwork, and calming sounds. Once the trial is over, you’ll have to pay for the app. Keep your eyes open for any sales!
A great app all around that I am LO-VING at the moment!
Sweat
The Sweat app is Kayla Itsines‘ baby. The app is very pleasing to the eyes and well-thought-out. There are several coaches that each have several training programs from training with weights, to post-pregnancy programs and pilates and yoga sessions. She even has a program that can accompany you to the gym which is great if you’ve been dying to train in the weights section of your gym but were not sure where to start.
I really like her way of structuring her workouts: 7min circuits to be repeated 4 times to reach a training session of 28mins. This is not too long and you should be able to fit it in even in the most treacherous of schedules.
I also like the fact that the app will accompany you in your low-intensity workouts, such as speed-walking or just simply walking. There is also a food section that gives you a meal plan depending on your diet.
You can use the free 7-day trial to test it out for yourself after that the application becomes paying.
Blogilates
I have been following Cassey on Youtube and her pilates channel for at least 10 years. She was the first channel I started to work out to (the beginning of a revolution for me!). At the beginning and for a very long time afterward I was doing her free Youtube videos and following her monthly calendars. They were great and challenged me quite a bit!
Her website has a lot of her challenges and calendars for you to choose from: from beginner to more advanced pilates workouts. I’m sure you’ll find anything you’ll ever need if you are looking for a pilates type of workout. She also has cardio workouts that will break a sweat!
Her Body by Blogilates app is free to download! You’ll have a few free programs on there and all her videos for free. If you want to follow her monthly workout calendars more easily, you can pay for it and you’ll have everything all ready for you to start working out at the tip of your fingers.
The app looks great and is very easy to navigate. It is mostly focused on the workout aspects, and you won’t find any meal plans or mind work such as meditation or breathwork.
Boho Beautiful Official
If you are more into yoga and mindfulness, I have been loving the Boho Beautiful Inner Circle app for several years now. They have all things yoga-related: yin, strength yoga, for beginners, intermediate, and advanced yoga practitioners. You’ll also find pilates, cardio, and weight loss videos. On top of it all, you also have a long list of mediation videos. Their morning meditation videos have been part of my morning routine for many years (even before their app!).
Everything is made to make you feel good in your body, sometimes to challenge your strength or your flexibility. They even created a prenatal section that will accompany you throughout your whole pregnancy journey. You can test the app out 7 days for free, the rest will be paying.
They also have a great Youtube channel you can check out. There you’ll find yoga, meditation, and strength workout. This will give you a great glimpse into their universe all centered around well-being!
They also have specific programs which have their respective apps. You can find those on their website. One of my favorites is the Retreat program: a yoga retreat from the comfort of your own home and much cheaper than a traditional yoga retreat. This was launched during Covid, where traveling and a normal retreat might not have been able to take place. It was amazing!
Down dog
I was introduced to the Down Dog apps during a yoga retreat and I was really impressed by them! They have developed several apps for different types of workouts: yoga, pregnancy yoga, HIIT, barre, and running. They also have a meditation app. The thing I love most about their apps is that you can completely personalize your workout. You can choose the exact length, the difficulty, whether or not you want music or voiced instructions.
On their HIIT app, you can choose the difficulty level for the top and bottom body parts, which muscle group you want to focus on, if you want a warm-up and a stretch session afterward, the duration of the exercises, and the rest time. My mind was BLOWN AWAY! I really love to be able to fit the workout to how my body was feeling on a specific day.
You can download the app for free and then you have paying features in the app.
Another great thing is that the apps are available in a multitude of languages, which is a real plus compared to the other apps out there which are mainly available in English. During Covid, they made the apps accessible for free so that everyone could work out despite being stuck at home. This says a lot about the people behind the apps and their intentions. I love it!
