Let’s read more books this year!
How to read more books
Choose a time that suits you best
Most importantly to make your reading habit a success, you need to find the time that will suit you best. Every day might not be the same for you. Consequently, on some days, you might have time to read in the morning, and some days you’ll only be able to squeeze in a few pages before going to bed. Please remember that this does not need to be perfect. Focus on enjoying any pages you do manage to read, as reading should be an enjoyable experience!
You’ll need to have a good look at your day or week and figure out those little pockets of time and quiet where you could pick up your book. In the best-case scenario, you’ll find some time to dedicate to reading only. You’ll find a comfy spot in your home or outside to just sit down and dive into a great story. If this is not the case, fear not!
You might have moments where you are already “doing” something but you could add reading to the mix. For instance, when you are commuting to work, whilst you are taking a bath, waiting for an appointment, or queuing. Whilst you are going something (taking the bus, sitting down waiting, or standing up waiting), this does not hinder you from making that time more enjoyable for you!
In addition right before going to bed is another great time to read a few pages. Prefer a fiction book over non-fiction, as you want to be relaxing and transition smoothly into a deep sleep. You do not want your brain to start thinking about all the wonderful things you are reading about!
Choose the format that suits you best
At first, we only had physical books. However, nowadays, the options have widened: audiobook and ebooks! The great thing is that each of these new book formats fits with different situations. On your way to work?Audiobook! Traveling and not sure which book you want to bring with you and read? Ebook!
You might have an immediate preference for one of those formats, but maybe in order to help you read more books, you could investigate a new way of reading. Growing up I always preferred physical books, the smell of the page, the experience of turning the page and having the physical object in my hands. However, when I moved out of my parent’s house, I wanted to travel lighter and went for the Kindle option. Since then I have been loving my Kindle! The battery lasts a long time, and you have your whole library all the time with you. I love it!
Audiobooks are also a great option when you are physically on the move, at the gym, doing things around the house, or in your car. I had a period when I loved to listen to audiobooks when I was stuck in public transport and it was packed. I wouldn’t have had the option of pulling out a book and reading with ease.
Recently, I rediscovered the joy of reading physical books. That’s the beauty of the whole thing: you don’t have to choose one format for life. You can switch it around, and depending on your situation alternate from an ebook, to a physical book to an audiobook. Anything to read more, right?
