In France, they can be the final touch to a meal or just as a snack, in the middle of the afternoon to hold you over until diner. On special occasions, you might even have it for breakfast.
You’ll have many options to choose from the lovely display case in boulangeries, pâtisseries, and specialized dessert shops.
I have listed here for you some of the best places for traditional french dessert and some less-known places that have a modern twist on some classic French dessert!
So without further ado, here are the top 11 dessert places in Paris!
The Ultimate List of The Best Places for Desserts and Pastries to Try in Paris
The most iconic dessert places
Pierre Hermé
France has a long history of pastry making and Pierre Hermé is one of the world’s leading pastry chefs. He has been awarded three Michelin stars and was named “Chef of the Year” by Gault Millau in 1997.
His macarons have been ranked as one of the best in the world by many publications such as The New York Times and Food & Wine Magazine. If you are looking for some of the best macarons in the city, Pierre Hermé is a great place to go to!
Besides the wonderful French macarons, you’ll also find some delicious desserts and tarts. Usually, you’ll have some classical desserts and some seasonal ones. This is great because every trip will be different, and you’ll be able to taste the freshest ingredients.
Pierre Hermé won’t just stop there! He is also making chocolate! Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and chocolate ganache can be found in his shops!
Pierre Hermé has around 20 shops in Paris, so you’ll be sure to find one on your way (there is even one on the Champs-Elysée!).
Ladurée
This is the perfect place for French macarons! It’s already very well-known by tourists, and you might have already heard of it! You’ll have a wide variety of different flavors to choose from.
My favorite macaron is rose, but I’m sure you’ll find yours when you’ll visit. Be careful though, macarons are best eaten the same day!
Ladurée is most famous for its macarons, however, they also do pastries. I’ve already tried them several times and they are very good. The great news for all vegans is that they offer a vegan macaron and depending on the season, they also have vegan pastries!
They have 9 stores in the City of Lights, and I’m sure you’ll come across one during your time in the French capital. If you are ever in the 6th arrondissement of Paris near the Jardin du Luxembourg, you’ll find a store rue Bonaparte (bonus: you also have a Pierre Herme shop near the Ladurée one!).
Du Pain et des Idées
This is a typical French boulangerie, where you could try one of the best croissant in Paris.
The focus here is very well sourced and organic ingredients to make the best bread and viennoiserie possible: pain au chocolat, baguette, pain au raisin or chausson à la pomme. You’ll find all the classics here!
They are focused on the traditional know-how in French bread and viennoiserie making. They might have some variation in flavors of some classic items, but mostly stick to very traditional delicaties!
There is only one shop in Paris located at 34 rue Yves Toudic in Paris’ 10th arrondissement. The closest metro station is Jacques Bonsergent on line 5.
Angelina
Angelia is a very famous tea room in Paris that first opened in 1903. When it first opened, this was the place where all the most famous artists and creators of Paris gathered to drink the best hot chocolate and eat an exquisite cake.
When you enter Angelina today, the decoration is very classical and reminiscent of this glorious past.
They have several locations in Paris and the historical one is located in rue de Rivoli, nr 226 (get out at Concorde station on metro line 1).
This team room is very famous for its hot chocolate (with or without chantilly cream) which is a magical very thick drink. If you’re not the biggest chocolate fan, this might be a bit much. You might want to consider the other drink options on the menu.
Cake wise Angelina is famous for its Mont Blanc cake. Imagine a pie crust, with thick whipped cream topped with chestnuts cream. So not the lightest of desserts, but delicious nonetheless!
You can book a reservation on their website.
Des Gâteaux et du Pain
If you love Pierre Hermé and Ladurée, you should go and discover Claire Damon’s shop: des gâteaux et du pain.
She was trained by Pierre Hermé and also worked at Ladurée. She loves all things nature, which you can definitely see when you browse her website.
All her pastries look and taste incredible. She uses very seasonal products and turns traditional desserts like a baba au rhum into a strawberry baba au rhum.
The raw materials for her pastries, cakes and viennoiserie are all French, organic, and very carefully sourced. It’s a great showcasing of the variety of French fruits, nuts, and herbs!
Claire Damon has also taken some steps to have sustainable packaging and remove plastic from her bags, boxes, and other containers.
There are 2 shops in Paris one is at 63 boulevard Pasteur (station Pasteur on metro line 6), and the other is at 89 rue du Bac (metro station rue du Bac on metro line 12).
Next, you’ll read all about some lesser-known pastry and dessert places in Paris. If you have already tried the classics and are ready for something new, read on!
Parisian desserts for the connoisseurs
Le Loir dans la théière
Le Loir dans la théiére is quite a famous tea room in the Marais. They don’t do just sweet cakes and tarts. You’ll also find savory items on the menu, but the best part is the dessert table. There is a very long wooden table where they display all the freshly baked desserts. Those can vary seasonally and everything is made on site.
If you like a tarte au citron meringuée (lemon meringue pie), I can only recommend their version. The height of the meringue is very impressive.
The decoration of the place is very simple: the chairs and tables don’t always match and there are many posters on the walls, but people love it all the same. They come for the relaxed atmosphere and the lovely desserts. A perfect spot to hang out with friends.
The place can get quite full, especially on weekends and they don’t take reservations. To get there the closest metro station is Saint Paul on metro line 1.
Dunes blanches
This is a very special and recent treat originating all the way from Cap-Ferret, near Bordeaux. It was first created in 2007, through a happy accident. A baker’s son at 5 am decided to stuff his father’s chou pastries with whipped cream … and the rest is history! The Dunes blanches cream puffs were born.
In the beginning, you could only find those little gems in Cap-Ferret, but recently they opened a shop in le Marais in Paris! You can find it near the metro stations Hôtel de Ville on line 1 or Rambuteau on line 11!
They only do sell Dunes blanches with their special vanilla whipped cream. Towards the end of the week, you might find additional Dune blanches with special seasonal flavors: yuzu, chestnut, pistachio…and the list goes on!
A must-try if you are a chou pastry fan and for sure some of the best desserts in Paris!
Popelini
Continuing on with the love of choux à la crème pastries, we have Popelini!
The first store opened in 2011, and they now have 6 locations in the city of love!
The amazing thing with this top-notch dessert spot is that they have their wonderful chou pastries with all-year-round flavors (chocolate, pistachio, vanilla, coffee, caramel…) but they also have season flavors! They change them every month to benefit from all the wonderful seasonal fruits.
To be informed of their latest flavor, check out their Instagram!
These choux are something else! If you are into passion fruit, their passion fruit chou is A-MA-ZING! They only have choux’s to go, but you can grab a few and go sit on a bench in a park and just enjoy life, the view…and these choux! These are some of the best desserts in Paris you must try!
Eclair de genie
The éclair is another very French dessert. It’s a longer version of a round puff pastry filled with a deliciously rich cream.
You can usually find the chocolate and coffee-flavored one in every boulangerie patisserie in France. It is that much of a staple in our lives!
However, l’éclair de Génie decided to up the game and really get creative with those little éclairs. This is another of these specialized shops that only do one type of dessert.
It’s like with fashion, you have summer, spring, fall, and winter collections! Their design for Halloween or Christmas a really a piece of art, you almost don’t want to eat them…but they are delicious so you still do eat them!
There are a few shops in Paris. If you are already in the Marais, you can visit his shop at 14 rue Pavée, near metro station Saint Paul on line 1.
Pozzetto
Pozzetto is one of the best ice cream places in Paris. The ice cream is a bit more expensive than in other ice cream shop you could encounter in Paris. However, your taste buds will for sure notice the difference.
They offer many different flavors and they rotate flavors depending on the season. One of my favorite flavors is pistachio. During the summertime, they have some lovely fruit sorbet that will help you survive the Parisian heat waves for sure!
Their original shop was quite small so they extented to a second shop only 20 meters away from the first one. They are both located in the Marais, in the rue Vieille du Temple in the Marais, near metro station Saint-Paul on line 1.
They do other things very well, like a delicious hot chocolate with a side of whipped cream. You will also find some savory items on the menu, in case you wanted to prolong your experience at Pozzetto.
Sadaharu Aoki
The shop is named after the Japanese pastry chef. He arrived in Paris around 1991 and soon opened his first shop.
If you love flavors like green tea, yuzu, anko (red bean paste) you are at the right place. If this is not your jam, fear not! Sadaharu Aoki offers some traditional French dessert like the fraisier, millefeuille, moelleux au chocolat. So you’ll be sure to find a great tasting alternative!
I love matcha-flavored desserts and their twist on the traditional black forest dessert with matcha was a great hit. Also, their delicious matcha and genmaicha éclair were a chef’s kiss!
There are now 4 shops in Paris. If you are ever visiting the Eiffel Tower, there is a shop quite close by at 103 rue Saint-Dominique. Get off at metro station La Tour-Maubourg on metro line 8.
