Paris Food Favorites : Gros Bao

Sharing is caring!

This post is all bout my recent Food Favorites in Paris!

Paris food favorites

There is nothing I love more than discovering new restaurants, cafés, or desert places and trying them out!

I found out about the restaurant “Gros Bao” a while back and did not yet have the opportunity to try it out.

Last weekend, I finally went and…it was great! So here are all the things you need to know about this restaurant.

Let’s go ahead with my most recent food favorite: Gos Bao!

Where is it?

Gros Bao is a Chinese cantine located in the 10th arrondissement in Paris. The exact address is:

72 Quai de Jemmapes, 75010 Paris, France

The restaurant is two stories high and overlooks the Canal Saint-Martin. This little water canal is the perfect spot for hanging out with friends over a drink in the summertime.

The closest metro stations are Goncourt on line 11, Jacques Bonsergent on line 5 or Republique on lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11.

When is it best to go?

You cannot book a reservation for this place. So it is first come first served. To be sure, I arrived around noon (opening time for lunch), and there was no queue to get in. However 1h later, the restaurant was full, and there was quite a long queue outside.

So to have the best experience possible try and get there as close as possible to the opening hours, which are as follows:

Every day: from noon to 3 pm and back again from 7 pm to 11 pm

Over the weekend: nonstop service from noon to 11 pm

Between 3 pm and 7 pm, the menu is slightly reduced.

How was the food?

I love Asian food in general and having lived for some months in China, I have a particular love for Chinese food. We tried the XiaoLongBao, which is a Shanghai specialty dumpling. The ones we tried were stuffed with porc and the amazing broth. The dough of the dumpling was not too thick though it did not tear either. How I hate when my XioaLongBao tear and I lose the precious broth! Inadmissible!

The specialty of the restaurants is Peking Duck. You can either have the full duck with the sauce and the thin pancakes at diner service or the presliced duck with a bao bun and the sauce at lunchtime. So we had the presliced duck with a bao bun and the sauce. It was very good, though I would have preferred to have the thinner pancaked (as the bao buns are quite stuffing) and I would have liked crispier duck skin. But delicious nonetheless!

Another one of my favorites is the eggplant dishes, which we had with fried rice. It was a glorious meal, and I was so happy to finally trie Gros Bao!

How was the service?

When we arrived, we were lucky enough to be seated on the balcony, overlooking the canal, which made it an even greater experience.

Once you arrive at your table, you have a QR code for the menu and for paying the bill later on.

Chinese food

You already have all the cutlery, napkins, and all at the table, including a pitcher full of mint and lemon water waiting for you. I found it great to have that pitcher already there. Very efficient!

We used the QR code to pay our bill at the end, everything was smooth and easy and we could leave as soon as we were done.

All the waiters were very nice and friendly.

If you are looking for some great cantine-like Chinese food, this is the place for you!
